Fireplace Mantels As a Design Element
I have heard many times now about how excited my friends are about getting a new fireplace, or that the new house they are buying or renting has a fireplace in it. But they never seem to mention the fireplace mantel, and then when I go to visit, of course having a fireplace is nice, but I am always disappointed in the whole effect because the mantel has been totally ignored.
I have to wonder why a fireplace without a nice looking mantel looks so incomplete? The biggest comparison I can make is that it is like a picture without it’s frame. A lovely print on its own just looks like it is missing something. On top of completing the picture, the frame can also change the tone of the picture entirely as well. Just as a simple or ornate fireplace mantel can change the whole look of a room from simple and zen like, to charming antique, simply by changing the frame around the fireplace.
Another important aspect to having a well designed fireplace mantel is not even about the design itself. Having a mantel is just a great way to add other design elements to the room. If you think about it, old fashioned mantels were used as places to put sentimental objects, or add some interest to the decor of a room. My grandmothers mantel always had an antique ornate gold framed mirror above it.
If your fireplace doesn’t already have a mantel, then this is the easiest situation to add one, since you don’t have to make any decisions to get rid of a nice old antique fireplace, or deal with removing the old one, or try to come up with a way to cover up the old one. Deciding to go ahead and add a fireplace mantel is one renovation project that will definitely be worth it once you’re done.
So if you have decided to take the plunge, how should you go about adding mantel to your fireplace? The most important thing to do is take measurements. The second most important thing to do is go shopping! You can do this online, at local fireplace stores, or at antique and reclaimed materials shops. If you find a mantel that matches the dimensions of your fireplace, installation is simply a matter of fixing the mantel to the wall around your fireplace and adding any necessary trim to cover any exposed joints. If you can’t find a pre-made mantel to suit, then a good contractor or handyman should be able to build a mantel to fit your fireplace using a picture as a guide.
Upgrading your fireplace by adding a fireplace mantel doesn’t have to be a complicated job, and the value you receive will be totally worth the effort. Whether you want to add a completed look for your existing fireplace, or just want to change the style to match a new renovation, upgrading will provide years of enjoyment and satisfaction.
