Secure Your Home for Free

There are not ways to secure your home completely. But there are ways to make so difficult for the thieves to break in, that they will choose your neighbor instead. And the methods can be carried out for free or for a very low price.

The easiest way to avoid a break-in is to hide, that you are not home. First of all you should vary your routines, so it is not easy to know, what time of the day or night that you are away. It might sound difficult, but it can help a lot, if you just vary your departure time and arrival time just a little bit every day.

If you are on vacation for a longer time, it is best to stop the delivering of mail and newspaper. If your mail box is filled with post, it is easy for the thief to see, that you are away. You can also arrange with the neighbor, that he will park the car the car in front of your house sometimes. Do also make arrangement about mowing the lawn and removing the snow.

Last but not least do not write on Facebook, Twitter etc. that you are away on vacation, if you have an open profile everybody can read. Thieves are also using computers in their work.

Light is a simple but effective way to avoid break-ins. A lot of light will scare the burglars, so they find another house instead. Do always make sure that obvious break-in places are well lighted. Floodlight on the corners of the house can also light the wall up, so the thieves cannot hide.

You can also use plug-in timers to turn the light on or off, when you are away. This is a very cheap and effective way to keep the buglers away. If they do not know, whether you are home or not, they will find another house. Just vary the on and off time a little bit, so it is not obvious, that you are using an automatic timer.

Do not leave tools in an unlocked shed. Put a large padlock on the door. And do not leave ladders outside the home. Many thieves do not bring anything but count on the things, the can find outside peoples homes. So do not make it easier for them by providing them with the tools they need.

Typical entry points for the thieves are windows. So to protect yourself the best way, you can put a simple steal bolt or rod through the window frame. This way you make sure, that the window cannot be opened more than a few inches. And it is still easy to remove, if the window should be opened more.

If you want to protect yourself even more, you can also buy security cameras and alarm systems. And then an obvious thing, that many people forget; always lock the doors and close the windows, when you are leaving home.
